During an earnings call in February, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that the production of Frozen 3 was already underway. This will be the third film in the franchise about Anna and Elsa, whose magical ice talents take them on adventures into new realms alongside Olaf and Kristoff. Anna and Elsa have magical ice powers that take them on adventures. Fans are holding out hope that the third film would address some of the overarching themes that were presented in the first two films, and perhaps provide a happy ending for Anna and Elsa. But how far along is the movie in its production?
Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee Are Back
A few years after the astronomically successful first film, Disney is finally getting around to releasing a sequel. But what exactly can we expect?
Director Chris Buck (Tarzan, Surf’s Up) and writer Jennifer Lee (Wreck-It Ralph) are back to helm the follow-ups to Frozen. Inspired by Hans Christian Anderson’s The Snow Queen, the 2013 megahit followed the story of two sisters separated by tragedy and the secret power of ice magic.
The film was a critical and commercial success, spawning multiple hit songs — including the inescapable earworm “Let It Go” — and helping to burst open the door for female directors at Walt Disney Animation Studios. The pair sat down with Screen Rant to talk about their experience working on the project. They touched on some of the film’s biggest changes and even their favorite cut musical numbers. The full interview can be seen below.
Joe Cornish Is Directing
After starring in and writing for the Channel 4 sketch series The Adam and Joe Show with comedian Adam Buxton, English filmmaker Joe Cornish burst onto the scene with 2011’s Attack the Block. The urban extraterrestrial sci-fi film became a cult hit and earned Cornish a BAFTA nomination. He’s since gone on to write and direct other films, including The Kid Who Would Be King and Lockwood & Co., a Netflix original series he also wrote and directed the story for based on Jonathan Stroud’s popular YA book series.
He’s also attached to direct a sequel to the low-budget horror film The Animal, about a man who starts getting animal parts in his body after he’s injured in an accident. The movie will have its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival next year.
John Boyega Is Producing
After completing the Star Wars trilogy as Finn, John Boyega is expanding his horizons behind the camera, as he’s becoming an increasingly busy producer. His UpperRoom Productions signed a deal with Netflix this year and is already working on a number of films, including crime drama God Is Good and fantasy/horror Spriggan.
Boyega is also producing the sequel to Joe Cornish’s debut, which will follow up a decade on from the original. The film has a writer, but no release date has been set yet.
The beloved teen rom-com starring Anne Hathaway are getting a third film in the series, and this time the writing is being handled by Aadrita Mukerji. She’s written the screenplay for the film that will likely star Hathaway once again as Mia Thermopolis.
Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell Are Returning
After the first Frozen film exploded into theatres in 2013, it became the highest-grossing animated movie of all time and earned Disney a big sequel, which was released last year. The sequel followed Elsa and Anna as they ventured into an enchanted forest to discover the origin of Elsa’s uncontrollable ice powers. Menzel and Bell both returned as Queen Elsa and Princess Anna, respectively.
In a recent interview, the Broadway stars discussed their hopes for a third film and both seemed eager to return. Specifically, Menzel said that she’s “just waiting for the call” to return as Elsa.
Two-time Tony winner Jonathan Groff (Spring Awakening, Hamilton) also returns to voice Kristoff and Olaf in the new film. Josh Gad, who voices everyone’s favorite talking snowman, is also on board. With a strong cast like that, it wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that the sequel will be successful. It might take a little while before we see Frozen 3 hit theatres, but it’s definitely happening.
